Aerosols and Ice Particle Size in Tropical Cumulonimbus

چکیده

A retrieval of ice crystal size near the tops of active deep convective clouds (Cb) throughout the Tropics over a 12-year period is presented based on radiances from the 3.7m channel of the AVHRR (Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer). Effective diameters ( ) are 10-20% smaller over land than ocean. Downwind of continents, crystals are smallest when low-level, offshore transport is strongest. Other regional, seasonal, interannual and long-term variations are also found. These are compared with variations of TOMS (Total Ozone Mapping Spectroradiometer) retrieved tropospheric aerosol and with variations of convective intensity and amount in an effort to identify potential causes by statistical association. Ice particles prove to be smaller when aerosol amounts are greater and when convection is more intense, but appear unrelated to convective rate of occurrence. Aerosols appear to be the most important influence on seasonal and longer times scales, with a consistent 20% decrease in Cb crystal effective diameter per unit increase in TOMS aerosol index in regions of biomass burning. In the Sahel region of Africa, where dust and burning both contribute to TOMS retrievals, this sensitivity is closer to 10%. The variety of signals makes the possibility of accidental statistical association unlikely although it cannot be ruled out. Based on these numbers and on geographic maps of , open biomass burning appears to be more important than urban sources of aerosol in influencing Cb microphysics. Dust generated near burning sites may also contribute to the observed aerosol influence on .

Retrieval of Effective Diameter Variations in Tropical Cumulonimbus

It is of considerable importance to understand the impacts (if any) of aerosols and other atmospheric constituents on clouds. These impacts may include modification of the optical properties, coverage, dynamical behavior, and/or hydrological role of clouds. The most basic variables that must be measured in order to make progress are cloud coverage, optical thicknesses, and size distributions of...

Impact of known local and tropical volcanic eruptions of the past millennium on the WAIS Divide microparticle record

[1] We present a new method for inferring the relative location (lowversus high-southern latitude), and therefore the potential climatic impact, of past eruptions based on the particle size distribution (PSD) of micrometer-sized ash measured continuously in the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) Divide ice core. We find that particles from a high-southern latitude eruption (Buckle Island, Antarcti...

Satellite remote sensing of dust aerosol indirect effects on ice cloud formation.

We undertook a new approach to investigate the aerosol indirect effect of the first kind on ice cloud formation by using available data products from the Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) and obtained physical understanding about the interaction between aerosols and ice clouds. Our analysis focused on the examination of the variability in the correlation between ice cloud paramet...

The susceptibility of ice formation in upper tropospheric clouds to insoluble aerosol components

Ice may form by both homogeneous and heterogeneous freezing nucleation processes in clouds at temperatures below -3 5øC. Most investigations have focused on the former process. This paper presents results from adiabatic parcel model calculations that include the effects of both freezing processes in unactivated solution droplets. Uncertainties in predicting the homogeneous freezing rates are di...

A GCM Parameterization of Ice Particle Mean Effective Sizes for High Latitude Cirrus Clouds and It's Comparison with Mid-Latitude Parmaterization

Single-scattering properties of ice clouds depend on both ice water content (IWC) and effective size of cloud particles (Fu 1996; Fu et al. 1998). However, only the IWC information is provided in numerical models. Stephens et al. (1990) showed that the ice cloud feedback on a CO2 warming simulation could be either positive or negative depending on the value of the ice particle size assumed. Par...
